Rebekah is probably better known for her ingenuity, not God’s. From the moment she enters Scripture she’s a woman who easily takes charge, not hesitating to answer Eliezer’s request for a drink, and she waters all ten of his camels too (Genesis 24:17-19). And when asked if there’s room in her father’s house for Eliezer and his men to spend the night, she doesn’t consult at all with her father, she simply states, “We have plenty of straw and fodder as well as room for you to spend the night” (23-25).   

Rebekah has confidence oozing out of every beautiful pore, which may explain why she’d had no drooling suitors and remained a virgin (24:16). She also commanded the respect of her family too, because no way would they let her leave with Eliezer without her permission. And having her own nurse (59) probably meant she was a woman of some stature in that culture too. 

And in the story of Isaac she takes up most of it as well, as the one most instrumental in the blessing of Jacob. Which brings God’s ingenuity into the story, because Isaac was besotted with Esau (25:28) and wanted to give him the blessing – despite YHWH’s prophecy back in verse 23 that “the older (Esau) will serve the younger.” But YHWH has an ace up his ingenious sleeve: it’s Rebekah. 

Because Rebekah doesn’t mess around. When she sees a need she gets right to it. And YHWH can relate to that all right, because he’s always responding to needs, which in this case was getting Jacob blessed. Well, lo and behold, along comes Rebekah, who on hearing Isaac preparing to bless Esau, comes up with a brilliant plan of her own to get Jacob blessed instead. And does YHWH step in and stop her? No, he lets her go ahead with her crafty plan, and he even lets her pull it off too.   

To YHWH that wasn’t a problem, though, because he simply slotted her plan in with what he was planning. It’s a great lesson in God’s ingenuity, because in creating us with amazing brains – like Rebekah’s agile brain – he works with what we come up with to bring about what he wants done. So just like Rebekah we can think we’re being jolly clever, but God is even more clever, neatly fitting in our ‘brilliant’ plans with his. Which is encouraging, because we have all sorts of people right now who think they’re being ever so clever in their plans for the planet without a thought of God on their minds, not realizing that God is happily using their self-congratulating ‘brilliance’ to bring about his own plans. He did with Rebekah and now with “Jacob: God’s master plan continues”….(next blog) 

I remember the time when someone got the job I thought I deserved. And worse still, the time when I managed to weasel my way into the choice job I was after, but four years later it was taken away from me, and for no good reason given either.

It’s no surprise to me, then, seeing Esau’s reaction when he found out his weasel of a brother had lied his way into getting the blessing that he, Esau, was promised. When Isaac his father broke the news that he’d somehow blessed Jacob instead, Esau “burst out with a loud and bitter cry,” Genesis 27:34. 

That’s because a father’s blessing meant a great deal back then. And especially the blessings being passed down to those in Abraham’s family, because they included amazing prophecies from YHWH himself. Imagine being in Abraham’s family, then, and your Dad calls you in before he dies to receive his blessing “in the presence of the Lord” (7), and he says, verse 29, “Son, may God give you the bounty of heaven and earth, and give you so much honour that the rest of our family will bow to your demands, and nations too will serve you. And, what’s more, if people bless you they’ll be blessed too, but woe to them who harm you.” 

It would be like hearing from your lawyer, “Your Dad left you so much money and property and lifetime membership as President of his company, that your family and other businesses will always defer to you, and if they don’t they’ll get clobbered, so you have nothing to worry about for the rest of your life.” But then – horror of horrors – the lawyer hesitates, adjusts his glasses and says, “O dear, it says here on page nine that your Dad willed all this to your younger brother. I have no idea how it happened, but I’m afraid you come out of this with nothing.”  

Esau bursts into tears on hearing this and in desperation yells, “Do you have only one blessing my father?” (38) – but probably wishes he hadn’t asked because the blessing he gets from Isaac predicts a sorry future for him (39-40). Esau, therefore, can only be consoled by one thought: first opportunity he gets, he’s going to kill that rat Jacob (41-42).  

When Rebekah hears of Esau’s murderous intentions, she kicks into high gear again with a plan to save Jacob’s life. There’s no denying she is an amazing lady. And God seems to think so too, because rather than call her on the carpet for her shenanigans, he slots her misguided drive and resourcefulness smoothly into his plan so not a beat is missed. Rebekah wanted her favourite son Jacob to get the dying Isaac’s “blessing in the presence of the Lord,” Genesis 27:7. But that would take some doing, because Esau was the oldest of the two brothers so Isaac’s blessing would only go to him, not to Jacob. 

Maybe Rebekah genuinely thought Jacob was the better choice. And she wasn’t wrong thinking that either, because Jacob was God’s choice too. But in her concern, rightly or wrongly motivated, did she go to God about it? Did she express her thoughts to him, and trust him to sort out what was best? 

No she didn’t. Like Mother Eve in the Garden of Eden faced with the serpent’s challenge, Rebekah didn’t consult with God either. Instead, she came up with a ‘clever’ little plan of her own – just like her mother-in-law Sarah did earlier when solving her childless problem.

And hand it to Rebekah, dressing Jacob in Esau’s clothes and covering his exposed skin with goats hair worked a treat in deceiving her blind husband into thinking he was blessing Esau (8-17). It was an Oscar winning performance on Rebekah’s part, and Jacob would get the best supporting actor award for playing his part to perfection too (18-29). 

I imagine God chuckling at her ingenuity, especially when it was his intention to bless Jacob anyway. But also a chuckle knowing this story would be read by billions of people in the future, many of whom might tut-tut and look down their noses at Rebekah for resorting to her own means and not trusting God to provide. 

So why didn’t she trust God to provide? Because she was human. And isn’t that the point of this story? It’s a great story on how we humans get stuck with overwhelming challenges, either from other people, or from inside our own heads, and the challenge is so great it puts all thoughts of God out of our heads. It happened to Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and now Rebekah and Jacob too. All these foundational ‘father and mother’ figures we look up to in Scripture, and they’re all just as human as we are when hit with an ‘unsolvable’ problem.  

Imagine what it was like for Esau too, when he returns home from his hunt and discovers his weasel of a brother got Isaac’s blessing instead. To “Esau’s reaction” next then….

Isaac, great man that he was, was not the most impressive chap, especially in the eyes of Abimelech, the Philistine king of Gerar. Isaac, to save his own skin while in Gerar, had lied about his wife being his sister, and not only fooled the king into believing it, but everyone else too. Until, that is, Abimelech caught sight of Isaac and Rebekah having a grand old time in the bushes in clear sight of his window (Genesis 26:8). 

Abimelech was livid. He sent for Isaac, demanding to know why Isaac could be so stupid saying his wife was his sister – and so selfish too, because if someone had slept with Rebekah it would have brought open shame and dishonour on Abimelech and his people (10). And how embarrassing for the king himself too, being conned in front of all his people by this foreigner who’d come to him for help (1). 

But instead of banishing Isaac from his sight forever, which would have been totally justified, Abimelech, for some strange reason, allowed Isaac to stay and even decreed that anyone molesting either Isaac or Rebekah would be put to death (11).     

But then Isaac became so rich in Gerar “that the Philistines (Abimelech’s people) envied him” and in protest plugged up Isaac’s wells (12-15). The king now faced another major problem in his country, and again it was Isaac who was the cause of it, so this time the king did tell Isaac to move away (16) – or better put, shove off, because he was angry (27).

So why, then, did Abimelech, along with his personal advisor and army general, decide to go and see Isaac in verse 26? It surprised Isaac too, because he asks the king, “Why have you come to see me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?” (27). Good question: why would Abimelech, having been insulted personally by Isaac, and his people also being upset by Isaac, want anything to do with him? 

Abimelech’s answer reverberates through every generation in which Abraham’s offspring live, because he says to Isaac, “It’s because we saw clearly that the Lord was with you” (28). In other words, “Despite you being a pain, Isaac, there’s something about you we cannot ignore. It’s why I found myself telling my people not to harm you and to treat you well” (29). 

So does God take that into account with us as well, that like Isaac we’re not that impressive either, but like Isaac God provides us with something that helps people see clearly that the Lord is with us too (1 Peter 2:12)? In which case, “Why didn’t Rebekah trust God to provide?”….(next blog) 

When famine struck in Genesis 26:1, Isaac thought it best to head off down to Egypt. But, verse 2, “The Lord appeared to Isaac” and told him not to, but rather, “Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you” (3). Don’t run, stay, and I’ll work everything out. 

Because that’s the promise God made to Abraham and all his offspring based on Abraham’s obedience (4-5). So Isaac didn’t run, he stayed – but then gets hit with more problems. Not only is he stuck in a famine, he also steps on the same land mine his Dad did, by heading off to see “Abimelech king of the Philistines in Gerar” (1).   

And the same thing happens. The men of the region like what they see in Rebekah, just like an earlier Abimelech liked what he saw in Abraham’s wife Sarah (20:1-2). And Isaac, being a chip off the old block, resorts to the same lame tactic as his Dad to save his own skin, by claiming Rebekah is his sister too (26:7). 

No comment from YHWH was needed because Abimelech did it for him, yelling at Isaac (in our terms), “What on earth were you thinking?” (26:10) – especially when Isaac knew God’s promise to Abraham was through their own family line, not through a random Philistine sleeping with his wife. 

And more problems as well, when Isaac becomes so rich the Philistine locals get jealous and plug up all his wells (12-15). And when he moves to another area and his servants “discovered a well of fresh water” the locals claim the water is theirs (19-20). It’s like being in a situation where nothing you say or do will make people happy. But rather than quarrel and make things worse, Isaac moves away again – which seems terribly unfair when none of these disputes were his fault – but not to worry because when he digs another well, there’s blissful silence from the locals – which Isaac puts down to “YHWH creating an open space for us where we can spread out and flourish” (22). 

Isaac named the well Rehoboth, meaning “open space,” in celebration of some breathing room at last, and an escape from all the drama. So this was how YHWH worked things out for Isaac, by bringing him to a place of peace. And that’s how Jesus is still working things out for us in the drama of our day too: “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give you,” John 14:27. Is it that peace, then, that explains why Abimelech said to Isaac in Genesis 26:28, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you”….(next blog) 

Isaac had great hopes for the future, because YHWH had answered his prayer for Rebekah to become pregnant, and twin boys were on the way. But hope soon turned to despair on finding out from YHWH that the boys would not get along together, and one of them would end up winning out over the other (Genesis 25:23). Imagine knowing that before your kids are even born. 

So in only the second generation of YHWH’s amazing promises to Abraham and his offspring, there are already troubling issues in the family – a foretaste of which is given in verses 24 to 34, in Rebekah’s twin boys turning out to be such opposites. Esau was a rugged outdoors chap and his Dad’s obvious favourite, but Jacob the younger and quieter of the two was a domestic homebody so he was Rebekah’s favourite (27-28).     

Despite Esau’s rugged strength, it was Jacob, as YHWH had predicted, who turned out to be the stronger, managing to weasel his older brother’s birthright out of him in exchange for some lentil stew. Imagine having two kids and one is always outsmarting the other for his own ends. No hope of a close, happy family, then. 

But for all their troubles and despair in the family one thing remained rock solid: it was the promise God made to Abraham, that everything would work out as God promised “because,” Genesis 26:5, “Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.” 

Abraham made some poor decisions of his own, but never did he disobey anything YHWH told or instructed him to do, including the sacrifice of his son. It showed God that there was no limit in Abraham’s mind when it came to obeying. 

And that one thing carried on with Isaac too. Like his Dad, he made some bad mistakes, and even the same ones as his father, like saying Rebekah was his sister not his wife (26:7), but when it came to direct orders from YHWH – like “living in the land where I tell you to live” (2-3) – Isaac always obeyed. 

So when asking the question, “How do we cope – like Isaac – when life is both hope and despair?” – YHWH gave us the answer in the lives of both Abraham and Isaac: just keep on obeying what we know God tells us and instructs us to do, because “God will work everything out”….(next blog)

Up to the time Isaac was forty years old, life had been good to him. There was a hiccup in his mid-thirties when God told his Dad to sacrifice him, but even when his young life could have ended with the slash of a knife, Isaac did not question what his Dad was doing. He simply trusted him, and God.  

His trust in God and his Dad continued in the choice of his wife too. His Dad believed it was God’s will to find him a wife from those in the family who’d stayed in their home country of Haran after Abraham had left for Canaan (Genesis 11:31, 12:4-5) – and Isaac didn’t question that either. Nor did he question his Dad’s wish for him to stay home and let Eliezer do the work of bringing back a wife for him. 

And on Eliezer’s return, Isaac had no trouble believing Rebekah was the one for him. “He loved her” (24:67). So life was good.

But then it wasn’t, because Rebekah was unable to have children. Which put Isaac in the same situation as his father Abraham, because how could YHWH’s promises to Abraham and his offspring continue if Isaac had no offspring either?  

But one thing Isaac had going for him was his trust, because Scripture simply states that “Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife,” and “The Lord answered his prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant” (25:21). So life was good again. 

But then it wasn’t, again – because the twin boys growing in Rebekah’s womb were having such a go at each other that Rebekah cried out, “Why is this happening to me?” (22). And YHWH’s answer spelled trouble for the future too, because he said the two boys would continue their antagonism as nations later on too. So could life ever be good again for Isaac and Rebekah with this constant worry on their minds? 

But life could still be good, because they still had the assurance of YHWH’s promise to Abraham, that through his offspring, including Isaac’s and Rebekah’s children, YHWH’s universal blessing of humanity would continue. And isn’t that where we’re at too? Because we too are Abraham’s offspring, so we have the same assurance that YHWH is fitting our life story into “the purpose of his will” as well (Ephesians 1:11). Which gives us hope, yes, but how do we cope – like Isaac – “When life is both hope and despair”?.…(next blog)

The quote above in Genesis 24:12 was said by Eliezer, “the most senior man in charge of Abraham’s entire household” (2), when seeking YHWH’s help in securing the right wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac.  

Abraham had given Eliezer strict marching orders: “You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son” (37). And to get the point across as to how serious he was, Abraham had Eliezer “swear by the Lord, God of heaven and earth” (3), while placing his hand on Abraham’s genital circumcision (2), which got the point across that getting Isaac a wife from Abraham’s family was essential to God’s circumcision covenant promises to Abraham being fulfilled (17:9-11, 19). 

And so confident was Abraham in this being God’s absolute wish that he told Eliezer, “God will send his angel ahead of you” (24:7). Expect it all to work out then, my good man, and don’t fret. So with ten camels laden with goodies and supplies (10), Eliezer and his men set off on the 550 mile (885 km) journey from Hebron to Nahor, the town likely named after Abraham’s brother Nahor (11:27) in the area of Haran where the family had stayed on their way from Ur to Canaan (11:31). And it was at the well in Nahor that Eliezer asked God to “please grant success to the journey on which I have come” (24:42). 

But the angel had already made sure of that, because while Eliezer’s praying, up to the well pops Rebekah, the granddaughter of Abraham’s brother (15, 48). She’s pedigree family, exactly what Abraham wanted, and it soon becomes obvious to Eliezer, Rebekah’s family and to Rebekah herself that this was YHWH’s doing (27, 50, 58).

But YHWH had long been preparing the ground and putting the cogs in place, so that when Eliezer prayed, “Give me success today,” God had already answered that prayer before he prayed it. But YHWH did say in Isaiah 65:24, “Before they call, I will answer,” and in Matthew 6:8 that he knows our need before we ask him about it. But does that mean God works out everything for us ahead of time, so that life just falls into place perfectly like it did for Eliezer?

When Sarah died Abraham was “now old and well advanced in years,” Genesis 24:1. Amazingly, he still had another 38 years to go, but up to this point in his life “the Lord had blessed him in every way.” 

Really? But Abraham had been uprooted from his homeland, lived as a foreigner and travelling nomad in a strange culture, nearly lost his wife to an Egyptian Pharaoh, was banished from the safety and plenty of Egypt for lying, gave up the best land in Canaan to his nephew, had to save his nephew by going to war against a bully king and his cronies, be scolded by his wife for Hagar despising her, be circumcised in his eighties, have a newborn son at age 100, witness a city so depraved that God totally destroyed it, got himself into deep trouble twice with a powerful king, had to throw his much loved oldest son out of the family home to keep the peace with his wife, was told by God to sacrifice his other son, and then have Sarah die long before he did.    

So how was he “blessed in every way” with that lot in his life story? Well, it’s in how God defines “blessed.” Because two great things happened to Abraham: he ended up in an amazing relationship with God and an amazing relationship with his neighbours. He obeyed, trusted and loved God, and that relationship rubbed off in how he treated other people. 

God had also promised Abraham that his life would be a blessing (12:2), not just for himself but for his offspring all through the ages to come, and here we are now having Abraham’s blessings rubbing off on us. Because at the heart of his story is what God is after in all of us: it’s experiencing his “kindness and faithfulness” (24:27). Because our lives are much like Abraham’s. We too live in a culture that has little to no fear of God (20:11), but God somehow keeps our heads above water, gets us out of some nasty scrapes, spares us from making a real hash of our relationships, puts up with our stupidity and self-deception, brings us up short when we’re stepping out of line, and gets the point across in our messy lives that he loves us and he cares.

Because that’s what he did in Abraham’s life, and what was written about his life was “also for us” (Romans 4:23-24). In other words, what God did in Abraham’s life story and what was produced from it, is exactly what God is producing in our life stories. It’s a promise, that we too will be blessed in every way that Abraham was. So with that in mind, can we legitimately ask God – as someone did in Genesis 24 – “Give me success today”?….(next blog)

By age 137 Abraham was a highly respected figure in Hebron, viewed by the locals as “a mighty prince,” Genesis 23:5. So when it came to finding a burial place for his wife Sarah, who’d just died at age 127 (1), Abraham could have pushed the ‘mighty prince’ bit to get the spot he wanted. 

Instead he went in person to the sons of Heth (the Hittites), opening the negotiation process for a burial spot by humbly admitting he was “a foreigner and a stranger” in Canaan (3-4). It was a good place to begin the process, because the sons of Heth had more than bragging rights to that whole area of Canaan. Their father was Canaan himself, Noah’s grandson, so they could rightfully claim that land by ancestral birthright. Abraham could have got snippy in return, though, claiming the great God himself had promised that entire land of Canaan to him (17:8).

So things could have turned nasty, but Abraham’s blunders with king Abimelech in chapters 20 and 21 had taught him the value of mutual respect and the softly, softly approach in tricky situations. Not only, then, did he admit to being a mere stranger to the sons of Heth, he also “bowed down” before them (7). In two ways, then, he placed himself in a lower position to them, or as Paul might have put it, “in humility he esteemed them as better than himself” (Philippians 2:3).  

And when offered the chance by the sons of Heth to “bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs” (6), Abraham came back with “If you are willing” – or “If it’s fine with you” – when making his request in verse 8. It was all very respectful and amicable on Abraham’s part, tuning himself to the Hittites’ culture and customs, and their rights as landowners.  

And when offered his choice of burial spot for free (11), we now see Abraham’s respectful attitude as being totally genuine, because again he “bowed down before the people of the land” (12), and again if it was fine with them, he’d very much like to pay the going price in full (13).  

I suppose one could say, “Well, that’s just how they did things back then, bargaining back and forth.” But this was different, because God had called Abraham to be a blessing to people (12:2), and that, clearly, was at the forefront of his mind in his dealings with the people around him. He wanted everything above board, in the presence of witnesses too (16, 18), just like his offspring one day who would also “be spotless and blameless and at peace with both God and man,” 2 Peter 3:14. But, like Abraham would we also, therefore, experience “A life of blessing in every way”?….(next blog)
